Post Graduate Certificate in Rural Surgery





The programme is meant for the MBBS doctors having degree or diploma in either of the general surgery, orthopaedics and Obstetric and Gynaecology.

It is a one year comprehensive surgical package comprising of general surgery, speciality surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology and ENT. Brief essential components of radiology, anaesthesia and practical tips on setting up a private nursing home has been covered in the curriculum. Inspite of technological advancement and mushrooming of superspecialisations, there is no denying of facts that basic comprehensive surgical care is the need of the vast majority of five billion population of the developing countries. The concept of rural surgery will not only provide the surgical care at an affordable cost but also fulfill the objective of caring surgery to the doorsteps of the community.

The programme was launched in September, 2001 with an enrollment of 21 students in three centes. The number of centers an enrollment is likely to be increased in future years.

Objectives

The broad Objective of the programme is to provide continuing Medical Education to practicing surgeons as to enrich them with appropriate skills to meet the surgical need and demand of people from rural and semi-urban health setup.

Admission fees : Rs. 12,000/-.

Duration : One year (Maximum registration period is three years)

Eligibility : Diploma/Post Graduate degree in either of General Surgery/Orthopaedics/Obst. & Gynae.

Number of Seats : 10 per Programme Study Centre.

Implementation

The hands on training will be provided through rotational posting under different subject specialists at Medical College/Tertiary Health Institution called Programme Study Centre (PSC)) and District Hospital/Secondary Health Set up in public or private sectors called Skill Development Centre(SDC) . The students will maintain log-book and will also practice the skills in their own set up. The total duration of posting at PSC will be for 45 days and the total duration of posting at SDC will be for 30 days.

Audio-Video

5 Videos are available with EMPC. However, it is aimed at providing about 20 video by the end of 2003. It is also planned to develop multimedia package on the practical components of the programme .

Examination and Evaluation

There will be concurrent and term-end evaluation in both the theory and practical components. The weightage for concurrent evaluation will be 25% in theory and 50% in practical. Students will have to score at least 50% independently in each of these components to pass in the Programme.

There will be 2 theory papers––one related to compulsory subjects and the other related to the optional subjects. Similarly, practical examination will have two papers one for compulsory courses and the other for optional courses. There will be 3 external examiners in each paper. The examiners will be from the concerned subject specialities.

Readmission

The admission of the 1 st batch will be start from January 2005. The duration of the admission will be for 2 years and the students will be allowed carry forward their marks secured during the registration period.
